L-5-Hydroxytryptophan: antioxidant and anti-apoptotic principle of the intertidal sponge Hymeniacidon heliophila.
نویسندگان
چکیده
The intertidal sponge Hymeniacidon heliophila which survives under intense sunlight contains the antioxidant amino acid L-5-hydroxytryptophan (L-5-HTP) as major constituent. The content of L-5-HTP was determined as (0.45 +/- 0.23)% of the dry weight by quantitative NMR-spectroscopical analysis with an internal standard. Other known antioxidants such as flavonoids, carotenoids or tocopherol derivatives were absent. Both the oxidation potential and the concentration of L-5-HTP in H. heliophila correspond to the values observed for flavonoids being major antioxidants in plants. It was shown that L-5-HTP suppresses UV-induced apoptosis in human monocytes at the same concentrations as it occurs in the sponge tissue.

Effects of reciprocal transplantation on the microbiome and putative nitrogen cycling functions of the intertidal sponge, Hymeniacidon heliophila
Microbial symbionts in sponges are ubiquitous, forming complex and highly diverse host-specific communities. Conspecific sponges display remarkable stability in their symbiont communities, both spatially and temporally, yet extreme fluctuations in environmental factors can cause shifts in host-symbiont associations. We previously demonstrated that the marine sponge Hymeniacidon heliophila displ...
متن کاملEvidence of Unique and Generalist Microbes in Distantly Related Sympatric Intertidal Marine Sponges (Porifera: Demospongiae)
The diversity and specificity of microbial communities in marine environments is a key aspect of the ecology and evolution of both the eukaryotic hosts and their associated prokaryotes. Marine sponges harbor phylogenetically diverse and complex microbial lineages. Here, we investigated the sponge bacterial community and distribution patterns of microbes in three sympatric intertidal marine demo...
متن کاملCHEMICAL DEFENSE OF Hymeniacidon heliophila (PORIFERA: HALICHONDRIDA) AGAINST TROPICAL PREDATORS
Various benthic organisms have chemical defenses which reduce their predators’ consumption. Although their efficiency may be noticed in many organisms, many of their effects are not wellknown yet. Multiple ecological roles of secondary metabolites are shown in some sponges, which may represent an adaptative advantage considering the high amount of energy used to produce these chemical compounds...
متن کاملIsolation and cultivation of fungal strains from in vitro cell cultures of two marine sponges (Porifera: Halichondrida and Haplosclerida)
Despite the large number of reports describing sponge-microbe associations, limited knowledge is available about associated fungi and their relationships with the hosts. In this work, specific fungal strains were obtained directly from in vitro sponge cell cultures (primmorphs) and single sponge cells (cytospins) and compared with those obtained from whole tissue preparations. A total of 27 fun...
متن کاملCellular migration, transition and interaction during regeneration of the sponge Hymeniacidon heliophila
Sponges have a high capacity for regeneration and this process improves biomass production in some species, thus contributing to a solution for the biomass supply problem for biotechnological applications. The aim of this work is to characterize the dynamics of cell behavior during the initial stages of sponge regeneration, using bright-field microscopy, confocal microscopy and SEM. We focused ...
